Divvy

Expanding Bike Share to All Chicagoans

Exciting growth and changes have begun for the Divvy bike sharing system, thanks to the investment of Lyft, Divvy’s operator and sponsor. In Summer 2020, Divvy transitioned from an exclusively station-based docking system to a hybrid dockless system, adding 3,500 new pedal-assist Divvy ebikes. We also launched the first phase of our citywide expansion to serve all 50 Wards.

Progress to Date

In Summer/Fall 2020 the Divvy service area grew by more than 50% to cover 155 square miles, extending service throughout the Far South Side for expansion Phase 1. The new network of 78 stations was designed based on community input gathered in Summer 2019 at more than 165 events, engaging over 15,000 people.

In 2021, we shift our focus to the North West and South West communities, ramping up to cover an additional 35 square miles.

Engagement, Divvy Style

The Covid-19 pandemic has deeply impacted Chicago neighborhoods and limited local organizations’ ability to hold large-scale events that work so well for reaching community members. But we’re not letting that slow us down! Using creative strategies, we’re working with community partners to promote our online expansion survey, host online listening sessions, community roundtables, and socially distanced working sessions with local residents and stakeholders.

The Divvy expansion team realizes how online-only engagement can limit resident participation. To get the attention of residents on the hyper local level, we’re deploying eye-catching yard signs at potential Divvy locations, with a QR code and link to our survey. Community planning bike rides are another great, socially distanced way to explore the network with residents and get feedback.

Imagine-A-Divvy-Station-Here

Our emphasis on youth involvement drives our strategies, as they are the ones who will shape the future of Chicago neighborhoods, and they’re often the ones with the greatest need for transportation options.
