Powering Up: What Station Electrification Means for Your Divvy Ride

Divvy is upgrading its network across Chicago. Here’s what’s changing, why it matters, and what it means for your next ride.

WHY ELECTRIFICATION? At electrified stations, Divvy ebikes and scooters charge right in the dock, with no battery swap needed. That means more charged ebikes waiting for you, especially at the busiest stations. The impact is bigger than the station count suggests. City officials say electrifying just 110 of Chicago’s more than 1,000 Divvy stations could eliminate nearly 80% of battery swapping. According to CDOT, that cuts 100,000 vehicle miles and 48 tons of CO2 emissions per year, and the city expects it to raise ebike availability by at least 15%.

Chicago got here first. In 2022, Divvy installed what the city says are the nation’s first on-street charging stations for shared e-bikes. Today, 55 stations are electrified, which is halfway to the goal of 110. That growth was built with partners: Lyft has worked with CDOT and ComEd on the buildout, and Intersection is bringing power infrastructure to more than 100 Divvy stations citywide.

HOW TO SPOT ONE: Look for the “Electrified” wordmark on the station or find electrified stations in the Divvy app.

WHAT’S NEXT: Chicagoans are riding Divvy more than ever. This summer was the busiest on record, with more than 3.5 million trips, and July and August each topped 1 million rides, a first for Divvy. To keep up, more than 200 new or upgraded stations are planned across the city this year, with a focus on the Northwest, Southwest, and Far South Sides. The last 36 electrified stations will be built as part of that expansion, bringing more charged ebikes to more neighborhoods.
